Extreme Events in Europe?

At EGU, the presentation of a set of indices for their assessment.

The general assembly of the European Geoscience Union (EGU), held between April 24 and 28, 2023, saw the participation of over 15,000 scientists from around the world, with more than 16,000 presentations made in 938 sessions. Among these, on April 25, a session on Climate Services took place, featuring Giuseppe Giugliano (Scientific collaborator at the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change), who presented a talk titled "EUROPEAN EXTREME EVENTS CLIMATE INDEX (E3CI)."

E3CI is an innovative operational service, launched since January 2021, aiming to assess the frequency and severity of weather events induced across Europe. In particular, the service, funded by IFAB (International Foundation for Artificial Intelligence and Big Data) and developed in collaboration with Leithà Unipol Group, evaluates seven dynamics: extreme heat and cold, drought, extreme precipitation and winds, conditions conducive to hail and wildfires. Additionally, five of the seven components are assessed considering the emission scenarios RCP26, RCP45, and RCP85 with a subset of EURO-CORDEX models until 2100. The results of this index are distributed aggregated by nation for free, both as images on the IFAB dashboard (https://www.ifabfoundation.org/e3ci/) and as tabular data on the DataClime platform (https://e3ci.dataclime.com/).
