Bologna’s Guglielmo Marconi Airport embarked on an ambitious project in 2023 aimed at understanding and reducing the impacts of climate change on its operations. The scientific collaboration between CMCC and Bologna Airport, as part of the activity “Analysis of vulnerabilities and risks from climate change impacts on Guglielmo Marconi Airport in Bologna S.p.A.”, allowed the development a series of targeted activities, aimed at identifying vulnerabilities and assessing risk, in order to enable the identification of specific adaptation strategies.

The project phases included the climate hazards assessment, the analysis of the exposure of airport system elements and the vulnerability assessment of the system to the impacts of climate change. All this information have been integrated to provide a comprehensive overview of the climate hazards associated with the airport. In addition, thanks to the Dataclime platform, it is now possible for airport operators to access to detailed climate hazard maps. They include three different climate change scenarios (IPCC RCP2.6, RCP4.5, RCP8.5) for the period 2032-2061.

Registered users have the possibility to view and download these maps, which can also be integrated with other data platforms and which provide the basis for adaptation strategies development. This activity is an important step in addressing the challenges imposed by climate change on critical infrastructure. The developed methodology is currently undergoing further testing at other Italian airports
