FAIR: Fast AI Reanalysis – A High-Resolution Climate Reanalysis Service for Italy

The CMCC Foundation (Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change) announces the launch of a new tool: FAIR (Fast AI Reanalysis), an operational reanalysis downscaling service for Italy that delivers ultra-high-resolution climate data (~2 km) with a delay of only 6 days. This speed enables more timely impact assessments and supports decision-making processes across various sectors, which is particularly crucial in the context of increasing climate variability and extreme weather events.

Reanalyses, such as those provided by FAIR, offer reliable climate data to analyze trends, develop models, support policies, or implement practical applications. The data produced are especially useful for applications that require detailed climate information, such as water resource management, urban planning, and natural hazard assessment.

FAIR represents a significant advancement in climate data processing, offering a fast and efficient solution for obtaining high-resolution climate information for Italy.

Building on the experience of the VHR_REA-IT dataset, FAIR combines dynamic downscaling via COSMO-CLM with advanced deep learning techniques. This tool integrates physical models and generative neural networks, allowing for a detailed and interactive representation of key atmospheric variables, such as 2-meter temperature and daily accumulated precipitation, across the entire Italian territory at a resolution of approximately 2 km.

The service, available on Dataclime, enables users to access up-to-date climate maps with just a six-day delay, making it a valuable tool for rapidly analyzing extreme events and enhancing responsiveness in adaptation and mitigation strategies.

All data are available for free download. Users are advised to consult the associated usage disclaimer to ensure proper and informed use of the provided information.
